The MLB season has been over for several months and spring training is fast approaching. There are still tons of free agents available but one that is still surprisingly available is the right-handed power hitter J.D. Martinez. So where will he land? Here are the teams that are the best fit for the mighty power hitter.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have obviously expressed that they are interested in Martinez. In my opinion, this team makes the most sense. With the departure of Ortiz two seasons ago, it was obvious last year that they were lacking power. Martinez would the be the perfect fit in the cleanup spot for this power lacking lineup. Especially with the green monster in right field, his home run numbers will only improve. He hit 45 home runs last season so that could be dangerous for the entire AL if they were able to land this all-star hitter.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
With all of the moves that the Angels are making by signing Ohtani and Justin Upton along with the trade for Kinsler signing Martinez could solidify them a playoff spot. Granted the teams dire need for pitching, but with an aging Pujols, they could use a power-hitter behind Trout to keep the pressure off of him. They could place him at DH and put Pujols at first, which could be a great situation for the Angels who are on the rise.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants are in dire need of a power hitter and an upgrade in the outfield. Now with Denard Span gone and Hunter Pence at the end of his prime, the Giants need to sign an outfielder. The Giants also finished last in the league in home runs so Martinez is there a way of killing two birds with one stone? Signing Martinez would immediately upgrade their outfield and boost their home run numbers. Even though AT&T Park is considered a pitcher’s ballpark, Martinez could still thrive in this ballpark and with this team.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Martinez was traded to the Diamondbacks in July and showed that he is one of the best right-handed hitters in the league. It would make sense for him to stay in a place where he had success right? The only issue is that the Diamondbacks cannot afford Martinez unless they traded Greinke or Tomas, which is most likely not going to happen. The only way they could sign him is if he is still a free agent in March and he becomes desperate.
